Scientist, Protein Biochemistry
Elevian is seeking a dedicated, innovative, and motivated scientist with extensive hands-on experience in protein expression in mammalian and/or in other systems, protein purification, and protein characterization including the development and execution of cellular, biochemical, and biophysical assays. The successful candidate will be an important member of Elevian’s R&D team and contribute to the discovery and development of recombinant protein and antibody therapeutics for stroke and other degenerative diseases.
Primary Responsibilities:
Produce protein in mammalian cells and/or in prokaryotic systems both internally and in collaboration with CROs and CDMOs
Develop scalable expression and purification processes
Develop and implement assays to characterize protein activity and function in vitro
Characterize basic biochemical, biophysical, and functional activity properties of recombinant proteins and antibodies in vitro and support qualification of candidates for in vitro and in vivo efficacy studies
Support antibody discovery and development efforts
Design and assemble vectors for recombinant protein expression
Design and engineer novel protein variants of Elevian’s therapeutic candidates
Independently design and execute experiments, including data analysis, communication of results and proposals for next steps.
Present results, both internally and externally.
Education, Behavioral Competencies, Skills, and Qualifications
PhD in Biochemistry, Biophysics, or other related disciplines with 2 - 4 years of relevant industry or academic experience
Strong background in protein structural biology and biochemical and biophysical methods of protein characterization
Experience in purification of tagged and untagged proteins derived from various expression systems (mammalian, insect and bacterial).
Expertise in standard protein chromatography techniques on an AKTA FPLC (or similar) systems including affinity chromatography, IEX, SEC, and reverse-phase etc.
Experience with analyzing proteins (SE-HPLC, SDS-PAGE, Western Blots, and endotoxin assays)
A deep understanding of modern cloning approaches, rapid construct design, basic bioinformatics, and tagging strategies for the expression and purification of protein
Demonstrated ability to implement a variety of construct designs, different expression strategies, and use of multiple expression systems
Experience with mammalian cell culture and aseptic techniques
Excellent team working skills and adaptability
Ability to work independently, design experiments, follow and adapt protocols, conduct, interpret, and optimize experimental studies is a must.
The candidate should have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Clear scientific presentation skills during project and team meetings are required.
Must have excellent organization skills. The candidate is expected to document all aspects of experiments performed and be able to conduct independent research to collect and archive all necessary information from the literature.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with biochemical/biophysical assays such as SPR, BLI, AUC, ITC, etc. is highly desired.
Experience with antibody purification and characterization is highly desired
Experience with transient and stable mammalian (CHO and HEK) protein expression
Experience with cell-based activity-reporter assays
